Date: Wednesday, May 8 at 4:20pm

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a lipid-derived molecule that serves important signaling functions in the control of pain and inflammation. During this session Dr. Piomelli, Director of Center for the Study of Cannabis at UC Irvine, will detail the discovery of PEA and its receptor and then move on to give an overview of its key properties – including production, degradation, biological effects and clinical applications. Finally, Dr. Piomelli will draw a parallel between PEA and cannabidiol, a constituent of the cannabis plant that has remarkable functional similarities with PEA.

Learning Objectives

  • How is PEA produced and degraded by the body?
  • What are the main pharmacological effects of PEA in animals and humans?
  • What are differences and similarities between PEA and cannabidiol?
